Howard Triest (known as “Howie” in the 2025 Hollywood film Nuremberg) was born Hans Heinz in Munich in 1923. He grew up in a loving family until Nazi persecution shattered their lives, with his parents murdered in Auschwitz. At seventeen, he escaped to the U.S., later returning as a soldier and translator who helped liberate Buchenwald and bore witness at the Nuremberg trials.
His extraordinary journey, from survivor, to liberator, to witness of justice, is told in the acclaimed documentary Journey to Justice and will soon be brought to life in the major Hollywood feature Nuremberg (premiering November 2025), where Leo Woodall portrays “Howie” Triest.
